In this El Niño year, anticipatory action projects are taking action using forecasts right now, as droughts and floods are happening around the globe, they are activating millions of dollars of pre-funded disaster action before the disasters happen.
There are tough tradeoffs for disaster managers between acting earlier and having enough accuracy. The people responsible for managing disasters must have true agency and governance as they decide how much to bank on forecasts to carefully bridge the gap between the science and decisionmaking. It is important to work hard to improve transparency to have something more than a renamed alert system that truly honors sovereignty for climate justice.
In this highly interactive session, participants will use actual project tools, inviting perspectives from high level leadership to nitty gritty implementers and explore how to move forward with the challenges in Anticipatory Action. Critically, we will work through ways that communities and local leadership can drive its design and operation.
