Climate School Perspectives Dialogue: Powering Prosperity: Building Low-Carbon Energy Systems in Emerging Economies
5PM - Networking Welcome Reception
6PM - Panel
Reliable, affordable energy is essential to economic development. Emerging economies need to expand energy systems that can support manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, cooling, and rising living standards. The choices made now about power generation, grids, and industry will shape economic opportunity and emissions for decades.
No single technology can meet every need. Solar, wind, and batteries are changing energy systems, while countries also face questions about reliability, infrastructure, financing, and environmental impacts. How can governments build systems that support growth and energy security while moving toward a low-carbon future?
Join us for a discussion about the different strategies, timelines, and tradeoffs involved. Panelists will consider how countries can finance and build reliable energy systems, how to weigh cost and environmental impacts, and whether current climate and financing approaches are helping countries meet their goals.
Opening remarks: Shih-Fu Chang, Dean of Columbia Engineering
Moderator: Alexis M. Abramson, Dean of the Columbia Climate School
Panelists: To be announced
