Federally managed public lands in the American West include National Forests, National Parks, and Bureau of Land Management parcels. Those lands are used by millions of residents and visitors for recreation, resource extraction, wildlife habitat, and spiritual renewal, leading to complex access controversies. This summer course provides an interdisciplinary overview of these dynamics, including study of the history of land use in the region, current resource conflicts, relevant policies, and the potential for future resolution. The course will be offered in a hybrid format that includes three weeks online and a one week visit to Colorado.
