Online Paths to Impact Amid the Infodemic Around the Pandemic

April 3, 2020
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
An open global communication solutions forum and workshop led by Andy Revkin of Columbia University’s Earth Institute Initiative on Communication and Sustainability Pandemics have long tended to be surrounded by what the World Health Organization and others call "infodemics." From India to the US heartland to the White House, fakery and noise have fueled dangerous public responses and muffled science and policy as the COVID-19 pandemic has exploded across the planet. On this Sustain What webcast, the Earth Institute's Andy Revkin will lead a solutions-focused conversation with you and these guests: Jay Rosen, the NYU journalism professor, blogger and media innovator who’s been a vital prod to the news business, aiming to break old molds and find ways to build a reality-based democracy in a world torqued by culture and politics. His red-hot @jayrosen_NYU Twitter flow has never been more essential, and the same goes for his recent pieces on the press and the president on his PressThink blog. Zeynep Tufecki, who studies the interaction of digital technology, artificial intelligence, and society as an associate professor at the University of North Carolina and a faculty associate at the Harvard Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. She just wrote a revealing and important feature for The Atlantic: “It Wasn’t Just Trump Who Got It Wrong,” describing how “America’s coronavirus response failed because we didn’t understand the complexity of the problem.” Daniel Castro, vice president of the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation and author of a must-read USA Today opinion article noting, among other things, that the first giant recovery package from Congress doesn’t include money to widen access to online information and connectivity. Please read and share “Coronavirus pandemic exposes why America's digital divide is dangerous.” There could be other pop-in guests. And, of course, there’s the most important guest – you! You can watch and join the discussion via Facebook, YouTube or, follow me on Periscope or Twitter and tune in there at the appointed hour.
