Has there ever been a more critical time for scientists to convey the value of science to lay audiences? How can we translate our research into compelling and persuasive stories that capture the richness, passion and wonder of discovery?
Please join us for a lively workshop, presented by WNYC's Science Friday, where you'll learn strategies for talking about your work and its significance in a way that informs a wide range of audiences – funders, policymakers, journalists and the public at large.
A panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session.
The workshop will be led by Katie Feather, associate producer for Science Friday and
an instructor in audio production at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute.
Discussion topics will include:
- The value of communication and outreach
- Identifying your audience
- The mechanics of storytelling
- Reducing and eliminating jargon
- How and when to use social media
Panelists include:
- Stephen Ferrara, professor and associate dean, clinical affairs,
Columbia School of Nursing
- Bianca Jones Marlin, assistant professor of psychology and
principal investigator at Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute
- Andrew Revkin, founding director of the new Earth Institute Initiative
on Climate and Sustainability, who has written about climate science for
more than 30 years, mostly for The New York Times
