September 23, 2020
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Online
Join Andy Revkin of the Earth Institute in live a solutions-focused Sustain What chat with author, environmentalist and model Lily Cole and Pat Brown, the lauded biochemist best known these days as CEO of Impossible Foods – pursuing a post-slaughter world of flesh-free meats. We'll focus on the themes in Cole's new book, "Who Cares Wins: Reasons for Optimism in Our Changing World." In the passionate but grounded volume, Cole explores issues from fast fashion to slow food, renewable energy to gender equality, aiming to dig behind buzz phrases and hashtags. Embracing the array of approaches to building a better human relationship with the planet, she interviews a wide array of leaders and innovators, ranging from tech-focused Elon Musk to activists like Extinction Rebellion co-founder Dr Gail Bradbrook and Farhana Yamin. (Pat Brown is also in the book.) Cole has a master’s degree in the history of art from the University of Cambridge, was an affiliate at The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of Glasgow for her contributions to humanitarian and environmental causes through social businesses. Patrick O. Brown is CEO and founder of Impossible Foods, a much-heralded company making “meat and dairy” products from plants to satisfy meat lovers and address the environmental and ethical impacts of mass-livestock farming. The idea for Impossible Foods came to Brown while he was on sabbatical from his position as an Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and professor of biochemistry at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine and recipient of the American Cancer Society Medal of Honor.
