What Are Harmful Algae, Are They Expanding, and Why?
Algae are photosynthetic organisms found in abundance in lakes, rivers, and oceans. Despite their small size, algae help make our planet habitable by regulating the climate, generating oxygen, and providing food for other aquatic organisms.
However, under certain conditions, a small subset of algae can pose risks to people and the things they value. Lamont Research Professors Ajit Subramaniam and Andrew Juhl will discuss their research on the environmental conditions that favor harmful algal growth and explore why they are appearing in places that were previously unaffected.
