Green Monday (Dine in the Dim)

September 28, 2015

In its second year at Columbia, Green Monday kicked off with Dine in the Dim, an event hosted in John Jay Dining hall on Monday, September 14th. Lights in John Jay were dimmed during dinner service in an effort to conserve energy and bring attention to sustainable practices. Columbia Dining cooked up a full menu of delicious sustainable eats and treats and encouraged students to try out the “smoothie bike” to make smoothies using energy created by pedaling. Laptops were available for students to take the pledge to go green on the Office of Sustainability website in exchange for a free Green Monday t-shirt. To date, 913 students have taken the online pledge.

The Columbia EcoReps also hosted a plate scraping at the event, during which they collected food waste and helped to promote a “taste, don’t waste” message to diners. 260 pounds of solid waste and 115 pounds of liquid waste were collected.

In addition to Dine in the Dim, Columbia Dining promotes Green Monday with meatless eating tips and menu items every Monday.
